I attended the GOSIM Shenzhen 2026 open source conference in Shenzhen today. The headline event for me was DHH's Omarchy talk and the post-conference Omarchy meetup. They didn't disappoint. DHH can be a polarizing figure, but whatever side of his opinions you fall on, one thing that you have to agree with is that his enthusiasm is infectious...and very refreshing in a world brimming with cynicism.

Moving on to the actual conference, it felt very overwhelming and frothy like a crypto conference during one of the bubbles more than what one would expect from an open source conference. It was overwhelming in that the agenda looked like it had been generated by an LLM asked to fill the conference schedule with talks on AI, agents, robots and harnesses. There were very few talks about open source software that anyone really uses unless you count Omarchy or rust...and even those were largely limited to DHH's short opening keynote, the after-conference Omarchy meetup and the concurrent RustConf China event.

There were a few interesting exhibition booths where people were mainly demonstrating hardware projects that they had made incorporating some elements of AI. The problem was, that if you were actually interested in the project and started asking questions to learn more about how it works, you would be told "oh I don't know, Claude made it."

It kind of hard for me to understand why one would go through the trouble of vibe-coding some software to work with a piece of hardware and man a table at a conference for two entire days sharing it and not spend like 30 minutes or an hour trying to understand how the different parts of your project work. This is a troubling trend.
