Children and phones

In an editorial advocating for government action on children's use of social media (which I think is not needed), SCMP writes:

Over half of children aged six to 10 own smartphones, according to parent-led group Look Up Hong Kong.

I'm very early in my journey as a parent but this seem crazy. Among my peer group who are parents, 14 or 16 years old are the usual ages when kids are allowed to have phones or will be allowed to have phones for children who are younger than that.

We are starting early and trying to foster a minimal screen environment at home and trying to lead by example by not using phones in front of our baby and never turning on the TV when he's awake or in the same room.
