Day 90 and baby's first vacation
I'm writing this in a dark hotel room with a sleeping baby. We decided to take a first vacation with our baby across the bridge to Macau as a practice run for future travel. We took advantage of the Macau park and ride scheme for Hong Kong cars that allows you to drive your Hong Kong-registered car 100 meters into Macau and park in a 3000-space carpark on the artificial customs island off the coast of Macau.
We are staying at a hotel that promised "baby amenities," but as new parents were unsure how well that would actually work in practice. So we packed many of the items that the hotel promised they would provide in our car but then left them in our car, a short taxi ride and immigration clearance away should we need them. It's sort of a cross between a roadtrip where you can bring as much as you can fit and your car and a plane/train trip where you are limited by your luggage allowance and what you can move on your own.
So far, everything has gone smoothly. The hotel has delivered on its side of the bargain and baby has adjusted to the new environment. As parents, we try to provide a safe and clean environment for our children in a dirty and sometimes dangerous world. When your children can't move under their own locomotion, this is relatively easy. All you need to do is make sure there is nothing within arm's reach that might harm them. We are now in the rolling-from-back-to-tummy-stage and the pivot-on-stomach-stage which increases the area that we need to make safe by at least an order of magnitude. I can now entirely understand why people say some of the easiest times to travel with young children are before they can walk and crawl.
As the title indicates, this is day 90 of my daily writing streak. I'd hoped to do something a bit more special for this day, but alas, life has gotten in the way. As always, thank you for reading and following along with my journey!
