When I first visited Hong Kong, as we were preparing to head out on the first day, I asked the college buddy with whom I was staying what I needed to bring.

He said, “Larry, this is Hong Kong…all you need to bring is money. Everything else you can buy.”

That statement made a strong impact on me because it was so different than the suburban American culture in which I grew up. Going out for the day meant figuring out what you might need and putting it all in the car. For example, you couldn’t just go to the beach empty-handed, you needed to bring things like food, drinks, water and chairs.

You don’t need to bring any of that stuff to many beaches in Hong Kong…even some very remote ones…because someone will be running a business to lend or sell you those things if you don’t have your own. Compare this to beaches in Florida or Ohio that are usually state parks with no commerce allowed.

The need to haul a lot of stuff around or hoard a lot at home (I’m looking at you Costco shoppers) is side effect of restricting commerce and preventing the free market from making life more convenient. Where the market is free, money is all you need.
