Purchasing a product is not a political statement

In the past week, I’ve come across half a dozen comments saying that the poster wants to use the search engine Kagi but cannot in good conscience because Kagi apparently sources some results from the Russian search engine Yandex. To spend $5 a month on Kagi would mean the commenter is supporting Russia’s war effort in Ukraine.

Just this evening, I came across similar comments advocating against the VPN Mullvad because apparently one of the founders personally donated some money to a small Swedish political party the commenter does not like.

Analyzing the political implications of every small transaction you make sounds like a very tiring way to live.

My personal policy is this: Purchasing a product does not mean you support the politics, views or actions of the producer or their supply chain or their supply chain’s supply.

If I only purchased things from people I entirely agreed with, there would be nothing I could buy and I would starve to death.
