I had breakfast with an old friend from Twitter that I met in person for the first time today. (Btw...if you're not meeting cool people on Twitter and hanging out with them in real life, you're doing using it wrong!) He is American and, naturally, our conversation turned towards the challenges faced by that country. I was very happy to hear that one of his side project is an organization that works to bring Americans from across the political spectrum together to talk with each other instead of talking past each other. This seems like a very worthwhile goal and as a member of the American diaspora, I am happy that there are people who see the problems I saw and chose to stay behind and dedicate a portion of their lives to improving the situation.

My relationship to former home is very different than the diaspora of many other countries that find themselves in the USA. Unlike many of them, (at least the high-profile ones) I don't have ill will towards my former home, its people or the government. I wanted to share my thoughts on what I feel is the proper behavior for members of the diaspora:

The choice to emigrate away from one's place of birth is to give up voice for exit. You exchange the right to participate politically in influencing the future of that place for freedom from responsibility to that place. This is the deal that members of the diaspora have made.

This is not to say one should not have views about what is happening in one's place of birth and to even express those views. Having views about the place you were raised is only natural. It is not your place to tell the people that still live there what they should do and it is most certainly not your place to lobby for or work to enable foreign interference in that place.
