Day 119

The last cycle's losers win

Share

A friend pointed out that the US Republicans' loss in their election earlier this week really wasn't a big deal because every president's party since the 90s has lost the midterms except for the ones after 9/11. This might be true, but I think it confuses what typically happens with what should be happening.

The US should be electing representatives that fix the problems with the country and make life better. Instead, no matter who they elect, things get worse. Because of the two-party system, the way the population shows its dissatisfication is by voting against the party that most recently failed them. This means voting for the party that failed them in the previous cycle. Having a choice between the people who failed you this cycle and the people that failed you last cycle isn't democracy, it's insanity.
