# The next generation

When I was in elemantary school, I was once asked to write a short essay about someone I looked up to...a role model...who wasn't a parent. I choose Captain Picard from the television show Star Trek: The Next Generation. I was very sad to hear that Sir Patrick Stewart, the actor who portrayed Capitain Jean Luc Picard passed away this week. 

While the character he played was a major influence on my life and, judging from thoughts shared on the internet today, the lives of many others, the real man behind the character was also inspiring in his own way. His life was a story of overcoming early adversity, finding a passion that was also the love of his life and becoming among the best in the world at it. And he personally shared the positive outlook on life and the world that the character he brought to life was famous for.

As a new father, I hope that my son's generation can find larger-than-life public role models that are as positive and inspirational as Stewart and Picard were. And if they can't, Captain Picard will still be there, in the captain's chair of the Enterprise D, just a click a way. Rest in peace Sir Patrick Stewart. Thank you for all the fish!
